Info for advocates coming to General Assembly

When Virginia is the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment it will be because a large group of citizen advocates gathered together and demanded a change to the status quo. Many citizen advocates are new to the issue and some are new to political advocacy. We are here to help make it fun and to ensure you feel supported on your advocacy days.

Step 1: Know your Virginia senator and delegate! Many Virginians, even very politically involved Virginians, do not know the name of their state senator and/or delegate. Never fear, there is a wonderful tool available online (https://whosmy.virginiageneralassembly.gov) to look that up.

Step 2: Call your Virginia senator and delegate and ask their position on the Equal Rights Amendment. Just a simple question. If you like the answer then perhaps turn your attention to finding a nearby district that does not have a supportive senator / delegate and work with your friends in that area to amplify those constituent voices. If you do NOT like the answer (or if there is a non-committal “no position”) then call daily. Please be friendly and pleasant as the people answering the phone are fellow Virginians and may want the same thing you want (and even if they do not, we want to be known for the “best citizen advocates around,” not the meanest).

Step 3: Make an appointment to visit your legislator AT General Assembly, particularly if you have an unsupportive legislator. This is obviously easier for some areas that are closer to Richmond but when someone drives a distance to observe the inner workings of Virginia’s democracy I am certain their legislators take notice. If your legislator has staff in the district during session you could meet with a staffer closer to your home.

Step 4 (optional): If you have an appointment to visit your legislator(s), notify the VAratifyERA volunteer coordinating that advocacy day. See list below.
