Roundup from campaign launch:

On Women’s Equality Day (August 26th) Virginia legislators and a few private citizens hosted a celebration of the day the Nineteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution and kicked off the campaign for Virginia to be the 38th ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Over 1,400 Virginians attended events at 10 locations around the state (listed below). The events included watching the “Iron Jawed Angels” movie, filmed in Virginia, which told the story of Alice Paul and Lucy Burns’ fight for a constitutional right to vote.

After the movie ended a short VAratifyERA video was shown. In this video Ms. Liza Mickens, the great-great-granddaughter of Maggie Walker, educated the audience by pointing out the fictional characters in the film and discussing omitted characters and actions. Most notably, she educated the audience on the action of the newly formed Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in the 1913 suffrage march. Although this action was omitted from the movie it will be memorialized in Virginia at the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial.

Ms. Mickens  also educated Virginians on the very low voting rates after the 19th Amendment was ratified, the low numbers of women who have run for / won state-wide office, and ensured all present understood the 19th Amendment did actually translate to all women being allowed to vote. For that to occur American progress needed to include the 24th Amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

At the end of the video Ms. Mickens informed the audiences that Alice Paul’s audacious fight for the 19th Amendment was not her ultimate goal, and that true constitutional equality is what she wanted. We in Virginia have the historical opportunity to ratify Ms. Paul’s Equal Rights Amendment during the 2019 General Assembly session and we should make sure to get it done!
